“What do you want to join, band or orchestra?” my friend asked me. “Both!” I replied.
I started learning the flute and viola when I was a sixth grader at Forestview Middle School. Before that, I played the piano and wanted to try something new. With the guidance, wisdom, and support of those involved in Brainerd’s music program, I continued playing the flute and viola in the band and orchestra programs, respectively, for the rest of my time in the district.
During that time, I participated in a variety of experiences, ranging from playing in state honor bands, MMEA All-State Orchestra, and collaborating with orchestras like Concordia’s and Heartland Symphony; serving as the viola section leader for our conference honors orchestra; winning the best-in-site award for my flute performances for all three years that I participated in the solo/ensemble contest; among others. I also played gigs around town, usually with my string quartet.
I continued in college, minoring in music performance. There, I joined the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble and picked up the dizi (Chinese bamboo flute), of which I’ve had opportunities like playing at the Schubert Club, Minnesota Orchestra pre-concert series, Mayo Clinic, and recording in MPR’s Maud Moon Weyerhaeuser as part of the Karin Larson YourClassical Award. My successes on the dizi are in no part disconnected from the strong musical education and foundation that I received from the wonderful mentors that I’ve been able to work with.
Now, I offer flute and viola lessons to students of all backgrounds.
Every lesson is personalized to accommodate individual needs, current skill levels, and personal goals. My approach fosters a supportive and motivating atmosphere for learning, with the ultimate aim of nurturing each student’s journey toward musical independence through a comprehensive approach.
I’m currently based in the Brainerd Lakes Area, so lessons are conveniently located for those in Brainerd, Baxter, Fort Ripley, Pillager, Nisswa, and surrounding areas. For more information about my background and experience, please visit my media and press pages.
